At Thomas and Saunders, we spend our days helping you see the world clearly. However, as health professionals, we know that your hearing is just as vital to staying connected to the people you love.

This 3 March is World Hearing Day 2026. This year, the focus is on a group close to our hearts: school-age children.

The “hidden” hurdle in the classroom

It is a startling fact that globally, around 90 million children are living with some form of hearing loss. Often, these kids are not “naughty” or “distracted.” They simply cannot hear what is happening.

The most important thing to know? Over 60% of these cases are preventable. Whether it is a lingering ear infection or something as simple as impacted ear wax, these issues can create massive barriers to learning if they are not caught early.

Signs to look out for

If you are a parent, grandparent, or teacher, you might notice a child:

  • Struggling to follow instructions.
  • Turning the TV, a tablet or phone up louder than the rest of the family.
  • Asking “what?” more often than usual.
  • Falling behind in speech or reading.

We are here to help (beyond just eyesight)

We want to make sure Hartlepool is a place where every child and adult can hear clearly. Because of this, we have teamed up with The Hearing Care Partnership.

It means you do not have to navigate the health system alone for basic ear care. We now have trained professionals right here in the practice who can help with:

  • Safe and gentle ear wax removal: A very common cause of temporary hearing loss.
  • Full hearing assessments: If you feel like things are not as sharp as they used to be.

A quick favour for World Hearing Day

Take five minutes this week to check in on your own hearing, or your child’s. If something feels “off,” do not just ignore it.

If you have questions or want to get an ear check-up booked in, give us a ring at the practice. We are always happy to help.
